To my son,

It has been a long time since I last wrote you a letter my little love. However it was your second birthday last week and I felt that old familiar itch to pick up the keyboard and talk to you again. To tell you all about the world, and also to tell you all about, well…you.

Who you are, what you love, what brings you joy, and just generally what your life is like as a crazy, energetic and incredibly happy two-year old.

Yes, my sweet man, you are now two years old. And this mumma just CANNOT believe it. SLOW DOWN TIME, YOU’RE FREAKING ME OUT!

Just thinking about how quickly these last two years have gone, leaves me torn over if I want to laugh with glee or vomit from exhaustion. Just kidding. Sort of. Not really.

Now, a little bit about you so far. You came into this world a serious, frowny faced and quiet little man. You were so alert, so curious, and you paid such avid attention to everything that went on around you. Kind of like your daddy actually. You took every part of your life in your stride.

You gazed up at us with such love, such knowing, such contentment, like you knew the answer to every single question we had or would ever have. You little clever clogs.

It amazed me how smart you seemed before you could even talk.

But that’s not the point of this letter. The point this time is for the future you to get to know the two-year old you. So, here I go.

Things you like:

Smiling

You smiled as much as you possibly could since the day you were born.

You make your way through each day with a permanent smile on your face and it is so rare to see you without it. Even when you wake up in the morning and you call out for us, we generally find you lying face planted in the corner of your cot with your thumb in your mouth, eyes half closed and that sweet smile on your face.

How your cheeks don’t hurt from all of that smiling is beyond me. But good job wee man. Keep it up.

Talking

Oh my gosh, do you LOVE talking!

You talk so much, non-stop actually, and I am completely positive that you could talk underwater. Not only do you copy everything we say but you understand it all perfectly. #yousaidshityesterdayincontext

It’s actually really nice and slightly terrifying to have full and proper grown up conversations with you.

Chocolate

Freckles from our local coffee shop are your favourite, which is good because the owners make sure that each of your little fists (as well as your little mouth) are stuffed full of them every single time we walk past their shop. #wishtheydidthattome

As a side note, you also like to lick random things and pronounce that they taste like chocolate because you know that it makes us laugh. Things like the screen door to the backyard. The carpet. The dog. *insert an eye-roll and grin here*

Your dog, Boston

You love your dog so much. A little too much for the dog to handle at times. You always want him to be near you, and you always want him to do what you tell him to (which he never does). It’s very cute to listen to you call out to him to “Come Here!”, “Boston! Get on Mat!” or “No barking whoof whoof whoof!” in your teeny tiny voice.

I sometimes think that the dog only puts up with you because you cheekily and sneakily throw bits of your food onto the floor for him to eat at meal times.

Cuddles in the morning on the couch

I am not sure who loves this more. Mummy or you, little man. But we put on the tv, and you sit on my lap and snuggle into my side, resting your head on my chest. We will sit there like this for perhaps half an hour to 45 minutes whilst we both wake up, and it fills my heart with joy. I dread the day that this will stop.

Cake (cakey friggin cakey)

You love cake. You also love things that I TELL you are cake (even when they most definitely are not).

At your cousins 2nd birthday, you scoffed a massive piece of birthday cake and desperately wanted more. When you asked for more, I said no, so you looked around the room calling out from person to person (including one person who you had never met before, so referred to purely as “Lady!”. “Please Lady, cake?!”), asking hopefully for someone to give you more cake. Nope.

Your family

You have quite a large extended family and you love every single one of member of it with your heart and soul. The way you love them is infectious, so the feeling is returned in every way.

You recite every family members name on repeat and take it in turns asking if they can come over to your house to play. You want to ring everyone just to hear their voices. You may not talk in return because you are so busy doing… well… stuff, but when we hang up the phone you always want more of them.

You are one lucky boy.

Things you don’t like:

Broccoli, running out of banana’s, and being made to sit down when all you want to do is run.

That’s about it. And I don’t blame you for any of it.

So my little love, you will see from this letter (hopefully) that you have such a happy soul.

You bring so much joy to us as well as everyone that is around you, and although sometimes I would love nothing more than a quiet lie down until 11:00am, and to eat chocolate out in the open on the couch, the happiness that you bring us makes everything worth it.

So thank you little angel boy, from one lucky mumma and daddy. Thank you for being you, and for being so easy to love.

We are so proud of you, and are amazed every day by the sweetest, hilarious and big-hearted person that you are becoming.

We will love you for always, Mummy xxx
